When starting a project what is one of the first steps you take? Odds are, you look at the current state of that product or service you are going to work on. For example, if you had a project to reduce the number of steps required to assemble a computer, you would have to know how many steps it currently takes to make. By taking this action, you would begin to see opportunities for improvement.
To begin any process of personal change or development, you need to know where you starting from, your current state. I feel one of the first steps in personal growth is to think about the kind of person you are today. Yes, it’s a fairly “deep” thought process but if done right can be very rewarding and revealing. You may find that the person you thought you were, isn’t necessarily the person you want to be.
So where to start? Take out a piece of paper or open your favorite text editor and ask yourself where are you at, this moment, in life?
Some triggers could include:
What is important to me? This could include family, friends, career, and hobbies. Make a list of what is truly meaningful to you.
What are my values and principles that drive every decision I make?
How do I feel about my health, financial state, job, etc.
What are my current commitments?
What are my time wasters that need to limited or even eliminated?
When you are done, take a long look at the list. Visualize what kind of person you have just written about. Is this person driven by family or career? What motivates this person? Is it wealth, love, success…could be several things. Are there any surprises on your list?
This can be a great starting point to set goals for changes you want to make. Perhaps you want to spend more time with you family or make a change in your career. Maybe you need to make a fitness plan. Start to visualize how you will move from your current state to a new and improve you.

Hey Greg, first let me say the new blog looks great!
Now, for the post…
What a simple set of questions, yet totally necessary! It’s so stinking easy for us to travel down a road for YEARS, only to find we made a wrong turn WAY back when. I’ll certainly be pondering my passions and compare them with my current state of situation. Thanks for the timely reminder. Eric

Thanks Eric! Now if I can only manage to stop “tweaking” my site and let it be for awhile
Glad the timing was good. It is so hard to get out of the “rut” of everyday life sometimes, isn’t it?
