Back in January, as most people do, I created a list of goals to accomplish in 2009.  Yes, I realize it’s almost 2 full months into the year, so it may seem late to be sharing these goals. However, I want to keep them front and center so I can focus on completing them.

I have gotten off to a good start on a few of them, but have yet to start on a few others.  By making these goals public, I expect to be more motivated to complete them.  I feel confident that these goals can be accomplished and I look forward to the joy I will have when done.

So without further delay, here are my goals for the year.

Simplify. I need to reduce what I own.  I want to reduce my needs.   I want to eliminate the un-important. This means getting rid of anything I don’t need, keeping my living space free of clutter, and simplifying my day.

Pay down my debt.  I intend to make considerable progress in eliminating my debt and reduce wasteful spending.

Drink more water. This is a tough one for me.  I love Coke and Dr. Pepper. I have failed to stop drinking soda many times.  To stop, I need to acknowledge my cravings and find ways to replace them with healthier choices.

Visit at least 1 Civil War Battlefield. I am a Civil War buff.  Some of my fondest memories are the trips my dad and I made to Gettysburg, Shiloh, and Antietam.  This is already in the works as I plan to visit Gettysburg later this spring.

Build and foster growth in my team. I supervise 9 staff at work.  I want to help them meet their professional goals and desires.  By the end of the year, I hope they can say they have grown professionally.

Become a better parent. This year I want to spend more time with my sons.  I want to yell less and encourage more.  Listening, not just hearing them, will be important.  I am very excited to being Cub Scouts with my oldest son later this year.

Write more. I’d like to write more, primarily through this blog.  I’d also like to start a second blog that focuses on Information Technology in libraries.

Build new connections with people. Using tools such as Twitter, I hope to build new connections with people, professionally and personally.

Fitness. I want to get back in shape.  I’d like to loose 20 pounds by the end of the year through a combination of diet changes and exercise.
